Such was an odd thought for a cat like Scarredstar to have. He was never one to show any level of weakness, not even to himself. But it was true: being leader had aged him considerably. The constant stress left him feeling much older than he was, but still, he very much enjoyed his job. Regardless of his exhaustion, he powered still on, dedication to his Clan mattering much more than his own comfort.
He heaved himself from his nest in the hollow log, shaking moss from his mottled grey-brown pelt. He ignored the need for sleep clinging to his shoulders like an enemy warrior, for today was a good day. A grand day, even! Today his apprentice became a warrior.
He remembered fondly when he'd first received young Miragepaw as an apprentice. The tom was so shy, and had so little faith in himself. Scarredstar treated the cat like his own son, teaching him all he knew and praising him often. Scarredstar's praises never fell lightly: if he commended, it was always with good, strong reason. And Miragepaw was a good, strong cat, despite the lack of faith in himself.
Scarredstar walked out of his den and climbed up the giant rock that served as the warrior's den. Its grand peak jutted dramatically over the clearing of the AspenClan camp, and threw a curving shadow that was a good interpretation for the time of day. He reached the peak, standing tall, feeling at home here where faint pawprints of his ancestors indented the smooth stone. His paws slid into them perfectly.
"May all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Highledge for a Clan meeting!"
Scarredstar's one-eyed gaze swept over his Clan as they ambled from their dens. Once everyone had assembled and Miragepaw was in sight, he began the traditional speech, spoken by hundreds of cats before him, cats that now walked StarClan and observed this ceremony from the sky.
"I, Scarredstar, leader of AspenClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn."
He turned his single blue gaze on the small tabby tom who he'd mentored for so long. Even now, as he took his duty as the impartial leader, his one eye shone with pride. "Miragepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Miragepaw, from this moment you will be known as Miragefeather. StarClan honors your spirit and loyalty, and we welcome you as a full warrior of AspenClan."
As the shouts of the tabby tom's new name echoed around the camp, his gaze softened. He touched his muzzle to Miragefeather, and murmured softly to echo the cats below them, "Miragefeather.." WORDS 500 TAGS everyone CREDIT table by greyson of oteNOTES welcome miragefeather! |

Was this really happening? It felt like only seconds ago that Scarredstar told him about his ceremony, well actually Scarredstar didn't tell him. Miragepaw had overheard him speaking with his mother who at the moment was grooming Miragepaw as best as she could. The older she-cat had never been so proud of him before and Miragepaw was enjoying the attention, since after all he had thought she would be dissapointed with him.
Twistedpaw was sitting several foxlengths away and Miragepaw could see the jealousy in his eyes. The tom was much larger then Miragepaw however his mentor must not of thought he was ready to move on yet, probably because he was a bully and messed with the other apprentices all the time. Flicking his ears Miragepaw brought his gaze to his mentor and leader, green eyes filled with pride. He was going to become a warrior!
Stepping forward he moved away from his mother who's eyes smiled at him as he padded toward Scarredstar. Sitting in front of the rock he did not feel shy tonight, no tonight it was as if he himself was becoming a high ranking warrior and he was worth it! Lifting his head up he held back the purr that was wanting to burst from him, instead he flicked his tail with excitement.
"I, Scarredstar, leader of AspenClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn."
His mentor's voice was powerful and Miragepaw shook as he recited the lines that many before him had heard. He was ready, it was time that Miragepaw was going to be someone!
"Miragepaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
The words had clearly taken him off guard, the small tom nearly crumbled as he forgot his answer! He was fine when Scarredstar was talking about him but now he was talking to him? Oh great Miragepaw was about to screw everything up, everything he trained for! Shaking his head he fought back his fears of saying the wrong thing and nodded gently. "I Do, Scarredstar." his voice was about as calm as he could manage, but it shook with a hint of nervousness.
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Miragepaw, from this moment you will be known as Miragefeather. StarClan honors your spirit and loyalty, and we welcome you as a full warrior of AspenClan."
Miragepafeather was in awe, it was over, he was a warrior now! As his name began to be chanted amongst the crowed a purr rumbled from his throat. His mentor approached him and touched his muzzle gently making Miragepaw glow with pride. He did it! He was a warrior! Nuzzling his mentor back he nodded to him and shook his short tabby fur before looking back to his mother who gazed at him with pride, this evening was a true Confidence booster!
Miragefeather knew now that he will have to sit in vigil all night, he could do it...after all he did spend a lot of time not talking to anyone. Before anyone could try to spark a grand conversation with him he darted toward the camp entrance, and took his post. He had just spent several minutes in front of a crowed, that was enough attention to last him quite a long time.
