It was just after sunhigh, and Quailpaw was sore. Her mentor decided they should practice fighting and well Quailpaw disliked that idea greatly. After spending the entire morning getting beat on and worked her mentor just gave up on teaching her anything other then more basics. She was let off the hook, however she was told she had to catch some prey for the clan.
The older apprentice waltzed into camp with a mouse dangling in her jaws, as well as a young robin. With a flick of her tail she dropped the prey on the pile and began to make her way toward the Medicine cat den, honestly by now it was part of her daily Routine. With a gentle smile and her blue eyes sparkled with a look of excitement.
If her mentor didn't tell her to catch prey she would of went out to find some herbs, she knew that they were getting low on Catnip, and Burdock Root. With a sigh inwardly scolded herself for not going now to get some, Besides maybe Adderstone already got some she was the medicine cat now so she probably knew what she was doing.
With yet another sigh Quailpaw thought about how lucky Adderstone was, sharing dreams with StarClan, caring for SoulClan cats night and day. Oh Adderstone lived the most amazing lifestyle! And Quailpaw was stuck as an apprentice, most likely for the rest of her life. Composing herself she entered the Medicine cat den and glanced around as the familiar scent of herbs filled her nose. "Adderstone!! It's Quailpaw" she purred gently looking for her friend. Well Quailpaw considered them as friends, but Adderstone may have thought differently.

Outside the air was fresh and salt-tinged, with a bright sun splashing white light into pools that shimmered and puffy clouds as soft as moss roaming the playfully blue skies. It was almost a music of its own really, the melodies of Newleaf come to grace the island. However, inside the stuffy Medicine cat’s den was what one would politely describe as squalor conditions. Having just been promoted to her lofty status, Adderstone had little time to worry about the domestic issues. Grime swaddled the walls, dirt wove into the cracks and nooks, and a heavy scent of herbs mingled with the dust. Through a thin shaft caked with yet more dust and dirt bled even thinner rays of light that hardly brightened the dark room.
Adderstone sighed, sweeping her tabby monochrome-hazel tail in a wide arc, which unsettled the sloppy piles of herbs she was sorting. Burdock, burdock, burdock. Why could she never find that elusive strip of bark? Or was it packaged as a root? A plant? She couldn’t remember. Where’s the catnip, where’s the catnip!? The small tabby she-cat scrambled to find the missing herbs, pawing at the stacks desperately. But they yielded nothing. Unless she was too muddled to even recognize what could possibly be right in front of her nose. Nose… The newly declared Medicine cat switched tactics and began gingerly sniffing for the medicines she sought. Nothing. Well, everything. She could sense the smells of every herb she had in stock but could not sort out the individual scents. Again, she sighed.
Suddenly, she stiffened. Her deep sigh appeared to be reciprocated. Just outside her den, a soft whispering sigh echoed. Who could that be? But before she could attempt to pick out the individual who had done it, a tiny bundle of fur popped up from the entrance to the room. Quailpaw! Adderstone blinked at her as the apprentice gave a chipper greeting. “Oh. Hello. Come to help?” she asked hopefully. Typically she couldn’t bear the shame of pleading for assistance but considering the situation she was in, she was entitled to some humility some time.
However, Adderstone continued to stare at the apprentice. How could she have forgotten that it was customary for Quailpaw to visit her? Having suddenly noticed a silence embedding itself into the awkward conversation, she inquired kindly, “How’s your training going? Well? Uhrr… Who’s your mentor- again?” The older she-cat hastily pushed away the herbs clotting up the floor. “Despicably boring I bet,” she could not help adding, pride in her job puffing out her chest. But then her faded green eyes caught sight of the mess she had created, and she lowered them in renewed embarrassment.
“Here, I was just- Ah, cleaning. Newleaf Cleaning time and all that,” she quickly intervened, rummaging through her stocks again. She located at last the bundle of catnip, pushed it into a fairly decent pile (at least by her standards) and turned back to the apprentice again. “Why don’t you go and sort out the roots?” she offered. For a brief moment, she wondered why Quailpaw was not apprenticed to her. The small female was worlds helpful, so bright and cheery and loyal. Okay she didn’t particularly appreciate all the cheeriness but she owed infinitely much to her all the same. But this medicine-obsessed feline was apprenticed to some other Warrior (who probably had half as much brains as the roots Quailpaw would be sorting), and all she could think was- Why?

Making his way from his den to the she-cat's den they called Adderstone's. He only hoped the female would be glad to see him, and they would begin training right away.
The scent of herbs flew into his nose as he neared the den, followed by the scents of two other female cats inside the den. Perhaps, she was healing a patient, that would be good experience for him. His mother must have been smiling upon him, to give him such great chances.
Large and toned the tom walked into the den with a small smile on his face, almost forgetting that his scar went through half of it. With deep baritones he decided to introduce himself 'Hello, I am Basil-Leaf your new apprentice, I hope I was not ruining your fair ladies conversation.'. His smile seemed to deceive his scar, and his wooing voice did not help his condition either.
Hopefully the women would, allow his presence as he was supposed to be here, but that would have to be learned later . So he waited with his bottom to the floor of the den and his tail flicking behind him, waiting for a response that was.

“Oh. Hello. Come to help?”
Quailpaw smiled as the she-cat spoke and flicked her ear, she couldn't help but admire the new medicine cat. She was so lucky! What Quailpaw would give to be in her paws. 'If i were Medicine Cat i would have met cats of StarClan already, and been able to care for so many! Oh it would be an amazing thing!' The thoughts made her purr gently and she had forgotten all about Adderstone.
“How’s your training going? Well? Uhrr… Who’s your mentor- again? Despicably boring I bet,”
Her attention was brought back to Adderstone and she blinked. How Could she forget? Icestar was their leader and Quailpaw's mentor, and Quailpaw complained about him every day, well not really but she wanted to. Clearing her throat gently she smiled "Icestar, and training is very boring...Tried to teach me to fight today, again." huffing gently she knew she would never make it as a warrior, she would spend the rest of her life as the leaders disappointing apprentice.
“Here, I was just- Ah, cleaning. Newleaf Cleaning time and all that, Why don’t you go and sort out the roots?”
Now that was what Quailpaw was talking about, good ol' herb time! The idea of sorting through roots to most others was boring but to Quailpaw, she believed she was born to do that! Nodding gently to Adderstone she gleefully moved toward the roots. Suddenly remembering what herbs that she must be missing. "Oh Adderstone i forgot to mention we are out of Burdock Root and Catnip." She purred trying to be as helpful as she possibly could, and then he walked in.
Quailpaw looked at the first root but as she reached for it a tom entered the den, she recognized him somewhat. He was once an apprentice and had already been named a warrior. With a blink and a smile she looked at him to say hello, however it was what he said that made her jaw drop with terror.
''Hello, I am Basil-Leaf your new apprentice, I hope I was not ruining your fair ladies conversation.''
Quailpaw could not remove the terror filled look on her face, she was in shock. He was Adderstone's apprentice? Since when!?!? What made him so great!?!? Why wasn't she made Adderstone's apprentice, this tom was already a warrior! Shaking her head she blinked, maybe this was a joke, maybe she was just dreaming! Yeah maybe that was it and she would wake up moments from now and laugh about it! Oh wait it wasn't a dream since if it was the pain she received from training earlier. So instead she tried to calm herself down and looked as normal as she could, however her eyes gave away the fact that she wanted to cry. "Hello....Basil-leaf" she mewed quietly and pitifully. Her life was over.

Adderstone whipped her tail around in a stupor. Frantically, she pawed through her stocks of herbs. She was missing countless herbs: catnip, burdock root, marigold… Hmm, what else? Oh yes, she was also short on basil. Quickly, she separated the accumulated piles of medicines, spreading them all across the dirty floor. Just then Quailpaw stepped in, her usual bright smile fixed upon her face. Quailpaw was a soft-spoken, sometimes shy apprentice, but wholly helpful and friendly. Apparently, Adderstone was some sort of friend to the lonely she-cat, but the Medicine cat herself regarded her as someone who could be depended upon to help out. And indeed she required all the assistance she could grasp her paws upon at this time.
A miffed expression seemed to materialize upon the apprentice’s face the heartbeat Adderstone mentioned her mentor. The tawny tabby looked at her, her gaze somewhat distant. Didn’t particularly enjoy Warrior duties? Sounded a lot like her own apprentice days. Although in contrast, she was a magnificent Warrior. “Icestar is a lovely mentor,” she replied neutrally, her muted green eyes staring curiously. Then, realizing quite suddenly that this was probably a prickly subject for the young she-cat, she turned and pushed a lopsided pile of herbs towards her. Her offer of helping out was met with a look of pure, raw ecstasy. An amused grin floated briefly across the Medicine cat’s face. She could hardly believe any one cat could be so enthusiastic about sorting herbs.
Another wave of nostalgia washed over Adderstone. She recalled her earlier days when she would dance through the bright grass of the camp, her paws waving about as she attempted to snag a stray butterfly. And in the mornings, she would troop out and trail after her first mentor, eager to learn the arts of hunting and fighting. She would always return to camp with a jaw bulging with fresh-kill. Blood trickling down her throat from the kill, and small cuts adorning her sides from battle practice, she thought it was the best sensation ever. And oh the evenings… Curling up in the cozy den along with her peers was wonderful as well. But then, one day, she grew tired of it.
Suddenly, Quailpaw’s voice cut into her memories. Startled, Adderstone drew back from the herb she was staring intently at. She twisted around as Quailpaw explained in detail about her medicine inventory. So that’s why she couldn’t find the catnip and burdock root. Nodding, she meowed, “Oh, ah, I see. Then what about Marigold and Basil? I couldn’t find those either.” Quailpaw went to roll out the roots. Adderstone grew silent for a time, laughingly reflecting how much it seemed like the apprentice was her mentor, describing what herbs they had and what to do with them. Her actual mentor, Gazelleheart, had retired, and he was constantly rambling on about their herb inventory as well.
Adderstone returned her attention to organizing the various tree bark. She managed to group the Willow bark into a decent pile, then paused. “Quailpaw,” she said suddenly, “would you like to be my apprentice? You’re just so helpful around here, and I need the help. I’ll ask Icestar tonight if you wa-” But as she was speaking, she did not notice that another cat had entered until Quailpaw turned around to stare. Inwardly, she groaned. Not another patient. The last one had vomited all over her fur, and she had stumble all the way to the Sunrise Shores to wash it off. Then, the tom spoke.
Shock swept over her, and her eyes widened. Before she could stop herself, she yowled, “Nooo…! That… That can’t be… No one. Told. Me.” Then, realizing how rude her words were, she quickly intervened with, “I mean. Um. Welcome, Basil-leaf, let me show you around here. Aren’t you… ah… A bit old though?” Helplessly, she glanced at Quailpaw. Her pale coat seemed paler, and her eyes watery. Adderstone gave a slight shake of her head as if to comfort the apprentice, somehow.

With each move of the she-cats paws, the scent of herbs increased, he watched as the two females, sorted out the stock. Basil could slightly tell that there was no presence of some herbs, and a stronger thicker scent for others. As if there was more in stock then another herb. The den seemed to be room, that was a least to him and his size, as multiple cats would have to fit in the space at once, but it was getting boring taking in the surroundings, when he could be talking to his new mentor.
When his words had time to fill up the space, and reach the ears of the two females, he watched each's reaction. The smaller female, he saw looked rather, pale, as if she had just seen a star clan member for the first time. Her eyes seemed to be filled with some sort of fear, maybe she was afraid of him, or maybe it was his scar, he was not exactly sure, but it worried him, much so.
Basil-leaf moved towards her, as her hello came out, it seemed saddened and defeated, like he had done something to her he was unaware of. Sitting next to her and the piles of herbs, he wanted to cheer her up some how, he could not stand other cats being sad, and sounding defeated. 'Are you alright, you seem to be grieving something' He offered her a smile hoping she would cheer up some.
The silence seemed to be interrupted by the verbal flailings, of Adderstone. She seemed just as surprised as the other female was, she seemed a but rude at first, but he could tell that the stock made her reaction that way. His comfort level was returned as she lowered her voice, and began speaking like a rational feline.
She asked lots of questions, and said many things, but it was rational, which was basil-leaf was glad to hear. The tom opened his mouth once more to answer her inquires.'I am only twelve moons indeed, and have become a warrior, but at Icestar's request, I have been sent here to learn under your mentor-ship.' He wanted to see the other female smile, or at least try and be happy, before he began to walk around with Adderstone, if not he would think he was being rude, to leave her there in her lonesome state.

Before Basil-Leaf had come in she nearly jumped on the idea of becoming Adder's apprentice, it would have been all she had ever dreamed of! Sharing dreams with StarClan, meeting past medicine cats and leaders! Oh the stories she would hear! However her dreams were now crushed from the words of this large orange tom, who had already gained the privilege of becoming a warrior.
"Are you alright, you seem to be grieving something"
His words made her want to scream out in anger, but the quiet she-cat just crumbled further. Her stomach cringed and cramped and just just wanted to dissolve away. 'I'll never be anything...' she thought to herself and melted closer to the ground her skin growing warm as she felt anger blister in her body.
Quailpaw rarely ever was angry, she never liked the idea. It caused wars and made enemies. She tried her best to hide her feelings, she didn't want to look sad, nor did she want to look angry but those large blue eyes of her just gave everything away! She was a silly jealous she-cat and there was nothing she was going to be able to do about it. With a deep breath she spoke softly her usual melodic voice crushed and turned into a depressed quiet sound. "I'm fine."
